She went on and on. She remembered the night she swam far out, and recalled the terror that seized her at the fear of being unable to regain the shore. She did not look back now, but went on and on, thinking of the blue-grass meadow that she had traversed when a little child, believing that it had no beginning and no end. Her arms and legs were growing tired. "Good-by—because I love you." He did not know; he did not understand. He would never understand. —but it was too late; the shore was far behind her, and her strength was gone. She looked into the distance, and the old terror flamed up for an instant, then sank again.

I never got why there was such a social pressure to be friends with an ex boyfriend. "you broke up? well you can still be friends, right? " No, fuck that. I'm sure some people can, and under certain conditions, it could be a good thing. But if he caused you pain, if he cheated, hurt you in any way, why do you stay? Are you hoping deep down, he'll come back to you, see the error of his ways? Is it better to have a small shard of him, than nothing at all? What is the definition of friend, anyway? Isn't it supposed to be someone who loves you unconditionally, treats you with respect, someone you can trust? If he didnt follow through on this as a boyFRIEND, why should he be any different as a normal friend? This one girl claims what they have is so far beyond love. That's why they can still be friends. Not even just friends. Best friends. Bullshit, he hurt you and doesnt care, stop deluding yourself. I feel sorry for girls who arent strong enough to walk away. I will never be one of those people, who constantly look back on past relationships and sigh, wishing it could be as it once was. There's a reason you broke up. And if it's because he damaged you, then stop subjecting yourself to his games. Heal yourself. Respect yourself. LOVE yourself. And fucking leave him behind.
